Francisco Barquero, PhD
Director of Microfinance
As a PhD economist from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Francisco combines field experience with a strong understanding of the economic and institutional realities of Latin America. His work as an international microfinance specialist is grounded in goals related to poverty reduction, food security, gender equity, and long-term sustainability.
With more than 25 years of experience advising and supporting microfinance organizations in the United States, Canada, and Europe, Francisco has developed strong partnerships with microfinance institutions, credit unions, and agricultural cooperatives across Central and South America. He has helped launch, lead, and strengthen microfinance institutions and credit unions in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and India, with a consistent focus on underserved communities – especially women, indigenous groups, and urban micro-entrepreneurs – through solidarity groups, self-help groups, and individual lending models.
